BATAVIA — Genesee County will have $2.45 million to address lead hazards in privately rented/owned housing in the GLOW region if the county Legislature accepts the award from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The Human Services Committee Monday supported accepting the money and forwarded a resolution to the Ways and Means Committee, which meets Wednesday.
The $2,455,000, to use this funding to support costs to minimize lead hazards among privately owned/rented housing populations in Genesee, Orleans, Livingston, and Wyoming counties.
The Lead Hazard Control & Healthy Homes Grant contract would be through Dec. 1, 2026.
Legislature Vice Chairwoman Marianne Clattenburg asked, “Is it regulated by HUD that a property that’s going to be rented through the HUD process, the voucher program, would they have to undergo some kind of screening of that home before it’s put into place …?” It seems like it would catch it before the family comes into the house.”
Public Health Director Paul Pettit said, “I’m sure they must have some type of requirements for the housing stock. I can’t speak to exactly what it is. We’re dealing with it, typically, on the back end after there’s a problem.”
The Human Services Committee agreed with the county Health Department’s request to reject bids from Don Brown Bus Sales Inc. of Johnstown to provide 25-foot and 30-foot mobile clinic RVs. It was the only bid the county received.
“The purchasing director and public health director have reviewed the bids and found that the one bid we received is over the amount budgeted for the mobile clinic RV and recommend rejecting the bids at this time, the resolution stated.
