Flag Design Class: Learn How To Create One For Batavia’s Flag Contest

BATAVIA, IL — The Batavia Public Library is offering a class to teach Batavia residents how to design a flag for the city’s Flag Design Contest.

A flyer for the event says attendees will be taught “all you need to know” about creating a submission for the contest, which began Nov. 1 and runs through March 1, 2023. The winning design will be announced April 1.

The class, open to teens and adults, will take place from 7-8 p.m. Dec. 28 in the Founders Room at the library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. Kathleen Tieri Ton, a graphics teacher at Batavia High School, along with Marty Callahan, a vexillologist who will have pieces from his flag collection on view, will lead the course.

The contest, hosted by the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, is meant to bring local residents together in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After seeing how our community weathered the pandemic together, it is apparent how unique the Batavia community is,” said Chamber President and CEO Margaret Perreault. “Our town has an amazing way of depending on each other, supporting each other, and coming together for the common good. Batavians feel such town spirit that it makes sense that residents and businesses in Batavia would like to display their community pride. Flying a Batavia Community Flag will allow us to do that! By engaging the residents in a friendly contest, we will capture the essence of all that is Batavia!”

There is neither an age restriction nor a fee to enter the contest. Organizers said the design should use no more than three colors, must fit a 3-by-5-foot ratio and must be original. Residents will be able to purchase the flag in two sizes, with prices ranging between $35-$50, once they’re manufactured by Batavia-based Flag Source.

The Batavia Chamber will donate 25 percent of the sale price to the Fox Valley Patriotic Organization in support of the Batavia Flag Day Monument.
